{"id":20512,"date":"2025-10-15T16:11:46","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T15:11:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.masina.rs\/eng\/?p=20512"},"modified":"2025-10-15T16:11:46","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T15:11:46","slug":"house-arrest-lifted-for-three-of-six-novi-sad-activists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.masina.rs\/eng\/house-arrest-lifted-for-three-of-six-novi-sad-activists\/","title":{"rendered":"House Arrest Lifted for Three of Six Novi Sad Activists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">On March 14, the day before what has been described as the largest protest ever organized in Serbia, six activists were arrested on suspicion of planning to overthrow Serbia\u2019s constitutional order. A recording of a private conversation among a group of 12 Novi Sad activists was broadcast on national television, after which six of them were detained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remaining six activists who took part in that conversation were abroad at the time and remain in exile under threats of similar repression. A decision is currently pending regarding the lifting of house arrest for Davor Stefanovi\u0107, Mladen Cvijeti\u0107, and Sr\u0111an \u0110uri\u0107 from PSG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While in pretrial detention, one PSG activist was beaten and had his nose broken, while Marija Vasi\u0107, a teacher at the Jovan Jovanovi\u0107 Zmaj Gymnasium in Novi Sad and PSG member, went on a hunger and thirst strike in protest of the extension of her detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"container-lazyload preview-lazyload container-youtube js-lazyload--not-loaded\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/0gRsu_2_OP4\" class=\"lazy-load-youtube preview-lazyload preview-youtube\" data-video-title=\"Radivoje Jovovi\u0107 je uhap\u0161en danas u Novom Sadu.\" title=\"Play video &quot;Radivoje Jovovi\u0107 je uhap\u0161en danas u Novom Sadu.&quot;\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/0gRsu_2_OP4<\/a><noscript>Video can&#8217;t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/0gRsu_2_OP4\" title=\"Radivoje Jovovi\u0107 je uhap\u0161en danas u Novom Sadu.\">Radivoje Jovovi\u0107 je uhap\u0161en danas u Novom Sadu. (https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/0gRsu_2_OP4)<\/a><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Alleged Coup Plot<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The recording of the conversation between the activists was aired on national TV and in tabloids as part of \u201cspecial\u201d programs portraying the student-led \u201c15 for 15\u201d protest as a plan for a \u201ccoup.\u201d It is true that, in the conversation, activists discussed various potential violent scenarios that could occur during the protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Radivoje Jovovi\u0107, president of the Novi Sad PSG chapter and member of the provincial assembly, told Ma\u0161ina: \u201cTheir conversation certainly contains no elements of planning a coup. In the end, it wasn\u2019t a plan at all \u2013 plans, whatever they are, are made at a higher level. This was a brainstorming session, throwing out ideas \u2013 the kind that happen in half the cafes in Serbia \u2013 which our people were fully aware of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey released it simultaneously on several national TV channels and called it a terrorist plan to overthrow the state. A crisis team of tabloid journalists gathered to build a narrative through which they would accuse all of us of undermining the constitutional order,\u201d a STAV statement read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Novi Sad police justified the arrests by claiming the activists had committed the criminal offense of preparing acts against Serbia\u2019s constitutional order and security, related to the offense of inciting violent change of the constitutional order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics argue that this latest incident of repression further demonstrates a pattern of the government\u2019s abuse of criminal proceedings to intimidate citizens into passivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><em>A.M.; D.S.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Activists from the Free Citizens\u2019 Movement (PSG) and the STAV organization, Lazar Dini\u0107, Marija Vasi\u0107, and Lado Jovovi\u0107, were released today from house arrest.
