The gatherings will be held in public squares or in front of Serbian embassies and consulates, with most starting at 11:30 a.m. so that participants can pay tribute to the victims with 16 minutes of silence at 11:52, the exact time the canopy collapsed a year ago.
In Switzerland, a commemorative gathering will be held only in Bern, where, according to the informal group “1152 Switzerland,” a national event will bring together people from across the country in commemoration of the 16 victims of the canopy collapse. The gathering in Bern will begin at 1:30 p.m. for administrative reasons, but organizers have called on everyone to observe 16 minutes of silence at 11:52, wherever they may be.
Commemorations have also been announced in Greece, Malta, Cyprus, and New Zealand.
The informal group “Diaspora with the Students”, which is organizing some of the announced gatherings, stated that several events will also include a photo exhibition “bearing witness to the perseverance of citizens in their struggle for truth and justice” over the past year. The statement also notes that representatives of Serbian embassies and consulates have been invited to attend the gatherings organized by this informal group.
Commemorations in the Balkans
Under the slogan “One World, One Struggle!”, students from the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Political Science in Zagreb have called for a commemoration to honor the victims of the canopy collapse. The gathering in Zagreb will take place at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Serbian Embassy.
“Stand with Novi Sad. Stand for justice and truth,” the Zagreb students said.
Students from Banja Luka in Bosnia and Herzegovina have also invited citizens to join a gathering marking the anniversary of the tragedy, expressing support for students in Serbia. The Banja Luka gathering is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in front of the Rectorate building on the university campus.
